This was not quite the first Top Gear ever… You might mean it is the first Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson in it.. There were 14 other episodes in 1989 before his first appearance on the 27th of October.
In total there were 528 episodes starting on the 13th of July 1978 and ending on the 4th of February 2002. Top Gear in its current format started again later that year.
