German car maker BMW is planning the public debut of its first four models in the BMW M Performance Automobiles lineup. All four models – BMW M550d xDrive (sedan and touring), BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d – were released last month and are powered by the same tri-turbo diesel engine.

The video below gives us all some insight into the technology behind the tri-turbo setup inside the engine. The powerplant produces 381 horsepower and 740Nm of torque. BMW has not only added a third turbocharger, but also engineered a new aluminum crankcase, common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors and high-pressure turbocharges with variable turbine geometry.

  1. Good video, I am thinking about getting a 330d sedan, or I might wait and see what engines they bring stateside for the new models. The new diesel engines coming out of Germany are awesome I would really like to have one.
