On Saturday this weekend we were unfortunate enough to witness a Gumpert Apollo S crash at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2012. The car, piloted by Tony Gilham, entered Molecombe Corner with a bit too much speed, clipped the grass verge and lost traction. The car ended up in the hay bales. As you’ll see from the video the car hit quite hard. The driver was okay, however, the female passenger suffered from whiplash and felt pain and numbness in her right side. The door had to be removed from the car and she had to wait for five hours before being given the all-clear.

It’s thought that the crash happened at around 80mph. We’re told that the impact knocked a marshall to the ground, however, reports suggest that he is okay. Damage to the car included bent side panels, a broken rear spoiler, a broken rear bumper, rear spoiler and dislodged front bumper. The accident meant that the hill closed for the day and the supercar run was cancelled.

Goodwood Festival of Speed More News

Goodwood Festival of Speed and Moving Motor Show usually witnesses a few accidents every year. This year’s Moving Motor Show saw a wrecked Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate at the same corner as the Gumpert and a Citreon which lost control at the first corner, setting off all the airbags. We’re also told that the Pikes Peak Toyota Tacoma hit the hay bales close to the flint wall and we witnessed a Ford Escort Mk2 RS1800 rally car hit a mud bank on the slippery rally course yesterday.

Regulations regarding driving cars at Goodwood this year had been tightened following a series of accidents over the years. The video footage from the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate you see below was taken while a Mercedes-Benz AMG ‘pro driver’ took to the track.
