Mercedes-Benz is considering the release of an electric SLS E-cell Roadster. The news follows after the confirmation by Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche that the SLS E-cell Coupe, the all-electric super/sports car from Stuttgart, will be available for order next year.

The SLS AMG E-Cell has an acceleration to 100km/h in just 4.0 seconds, a scant 0.2 seconds behind its conventional family member. It is all made possible by using a 324-cell lithium-ion battery pack and 12,000rpm, 480kW motors at each end.

According to Autovisie, there is sufficient interest in the electric coupe SLS, but if the demand for the Roadster increases the Germans would quickly shift their attention to a roofless version. The battery and electric motors, one per wheel, were developed in a way that the powertrain can be applied in both the coupe and the roadster.
