Ahead of the official debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2013 in January, Chevrolet has released the fifth-generation Small Block V8 engine for the upcoming Corvette C7. The 6.2 liter LT1 engine will be the main power source for the 2014 Corvette.

The engine produces 450hp and 610Nm of torque offering a sprint from zero to 60mph in under 4.0 seconds. It will do over 542Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. The overall power gain with respect to the LS3 engine it replaces is only 20hp and 35Nm.

An important part of the development was the subject of fuel economy. With the help of cylinder deactivation, the new Corvette powerplant is expected to deliver more than 26 miles per gallon on the highway. The figures with respect to city driving have not been released so far. Chevrolet stated during the press release that while premium fuel is recommended, it is not required with the LT1.

The engine will also be built at the company’s 75-year-old Tonawanda plant, which happens to be where Chevy’s original small block V8 was produced way back in 1955.
