Hongqi L9 at Shanghai

The quality of Chinese cars is slowly raising. Gone are the days when we’d see a European design and instantly write off the manufacturer and the entire industry. As a result, genuine car manufacturers are starting to emerge. One of the standout luxury car companies is Hongqi. At the Shanghai Auto Show 2013 they have produced cars such as the Hongqi L9 which used to carry ex-chairman Hu Jin Tao. Hongqi therefore competes with the big European brands, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Jaguar.

The Hongqi L9 is the civilian version of the state car. It features a 6.0-liter V12 with approximately 400 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. It is a car for VIP’s and therefore carries a suitable price tag! Many expect it to cost a price over $1 million when it finally goes on sale. Yet this is a definite discount over equivalent luxury cars which are heavily taxed for Chinese customers.

The civilian version of the Hongqi L9 gets a shorter wheelbase than the presidential car. Instead of the 6 meter long version that carried Hu Jin Tao, the L9 gets a wheelbase of 3435mm. As the company is state owned, rumours are bounding around that the car will only be made available as a gift to favoured persons.
