GTspirit recently had the chance to participate in Maserati’s ‘Master Maserati Driving Course’ where we had the opportunity to drive both the Maserati GranTurismo S and Maserati Quattroporte GTS at the Varano de’ Melegari track. The Master Maserati driving course provides actual and potential clients of the Maserati brand with the chance to improve their driving skills behind the wheel of a selection of different Maserati models. The Master Maserati Courses come in a variety of types, from a warm-up event suitable for people who have never driven on a race track to 1- and 2 day GT and High Performance courses for the more seasoned track drivers.

The Master Maserati driving course is tailored specifically to Maserati enthusiasts and as if having this exclusive opportunity wasn’t special enough, we were also lucky enough to be instructed by some of the worlds finest race drivers including Andrea Piccini who won the Spa 24 Hours 2012 and came in second at this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours race.

The most exclusive course offered by Maserati is its Maserati Master MC Trofeo one which has been designed to provide a thrilling and unforgettable experience for the biggest Maserati enthusiasts with participants given the opportunity to drive exclusive Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo race cars at the Varano de’ Melegari track.

The Maserati Master High Performance driving course then provides customers with the opportunity to drive Maserati’s flagship GT car, the Maserati GranTurismo. The course also takes place at the Varano de’ Melegari track and involves advanced high-speed driving concepts and more complex driving exercises. The course takes 24 participants and splits them into 3 or 4 groups and takes two days.

Finally, the Maserati Master GT driving course allows customers to get behind the wheel of the Maserati GranTurismo, Maserati GranTurismo S, Maserati Quattroporte S and Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS. This rather intense course involves drills on the track where the driver has to control the high-performance Italian exotics on a variety of simulated surfaces.

We attended a special course created for a mixed group of Maserati owners and journalists that included a full morning and afternoon of track instruction, a telemetry lap, a passenger lap in the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale with 2012 Spa 24 Hours winner Andrea Piccini and a figure eight lap record challenge on the paddock with a GranTurismo S that included a tricky full-stop and wet pad corner. During the track instruction we had the choice between the GranTurismo S and the Quatroporte GTS. Both were equipped with standard road tires and not modified to show what normal street cars can do on the track.

The day was constantly accompanied with the beautiful tunes of accelerating Maserati’s. The track event ended with an award ceremony for the winner of the figure eight challenge. To finish the Master Maserati Course in style, we went to the nearby town of Parma for a taste of the Italian culture and some of the best local dishes and wines.

Even if you are not a Maserati owner (yet), the Italian Master Maserati Driving Courses offer a very enjoyable day with proper instruction!
