A Jaguar XJ220 prototype that was used for development and correction purposes is up for sale at i-bidder. It’s one of only 5 prototypes that were made, and it is most likely the same prototype that was offered for auction back in March by H&H Classics Limited of the UK.

The prototypes had several differences when compared to the final product, which is an obvious thing if progress was to be made. It is shorter, narrower and lighter than that the normal XJ220, as you can see, the interior is quite empty. The body was handbuilt by Abbey Panels. This developmental prototype was used for high speed, brake certification and tyre testing work.

During that time, the car was assessed by Andy Wallace who won the 1988 Le Mans 24-hours with the Silk Cut Jaguar / TWR Racing team. To even royal assessing, the car was inspected by Princess Diana at the opening of Jaguar Sport’s Bloxham. The car was originally silver, later painted red.

It has a Heidegger race engine and had spent over a decade in storage. This was after an attempt to sell it to the US failed even as a kitted XJ-S. In 2008 JD Classics restored it for £70,000 and it has been road registered and MOT tested.
