Following Ford’s closure of all manufacturing facilities in Australia, reports are circulating from Australian newspapers that Ford is planning on closing their Ford Performance Division as well.

The proposed closure of Ford Performance would see famous Australian cars such as the Ford Falcon cease to be sold in the country. According to Australian automotive site Drive, the brand will be axed after the final version of the Ford Falcon is released in 2014. In the absence of the FPV badge, Ford Australia is reportedly planning on bringing back the XR8 moniker for future Falcon models before the model is phased out entirely in 2016.

Drive spoke with Ford Australia spokesman NeilMcDonald who, when asked, provided the following statement: “We are not in a position to comment on FPV and any future product plans at this point.” In consolation, rumors are pointing towards the possible reintroduction of the Ford Mustang to the Australian market as early as next year.

We will keep you updated as the story develops. At this time, however, it looks like the outgoing Falcon HSV GTS model will be the final and most powerful model Falcon to be released in Australia in the near future.
