Lamborghini Confirms It Has No Interest in Hybrid Supercars

In a world where its main rivals, Ferrari and McLaren, have junior supercars on the market far exceeding the outgoing Gallardo while also producing hybrid hypercars alongside Porsche, one could argue that Lamborghini is a bit behind the eight-ball. However, while speaking at the Geneva Motor Show 2014, Stefan Winkelmann confirmed that he currently has no interest in creating any sort of hybrid supercar.

“What you see now – and I don’t want to be, let’s say, finger pointing – but what you see now in the world of the hybrids is not something which is going to be in normal production cars; due to cost, or due to weight if the cost is a normal one.

“And therefore, I don’t know, if you think this is positioning for the future, it might be okay. But the future will be different to the cars you see today,” he said.

Importantly, Lamborghini is concerned with the sky-high prices for the current crop of hybrid hypercars and won’t venture down that path. Instead, Lamborghini wants to maintain its current DNA as closely as possible by further refining their current range of internal combustion engines to achieve greater efficiency and power into the future.

“This game is not, let’s say, fulfillable at the time being. And therefore I’m saying as long as it’s possible – in terms of technology – we’ll keep the DNA,” he said.
