Video: Behind the Hennessey Venom GT's Brutal Top Speed

Recently we brought you the news that the National Geographic Channel was set to feature the Hennessey Venom GT and its 270 mph top speed in its Breaking Barriers documentary. Well, it recently aired and we’re happy to bring you the almost 8-minute long video looking at the record breaking run.

During the run, the Hennessey Venom GT managed to reach a top speed of 270.49 mph. While technically faster than the world’s fastest production car, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, the record isn’t Hennessey’s because they only drove in one direction and at least 30 units need to be produced for a car to be classified as a ‘production car’ by Guinness. Nevertheless, the feat itself is extraordinary.

The Venom GT’s recorded top speed is impressive on every level. The space shuttle runway where the car clocked just over 270 mph is 3.22 miles long whereas Ehra-Lessien where the Veyron Super Sport’s top speed was recorded is 5.5 miles long. Additionally, the screaming V8 powered American supercar sprinted from 20 mph to 120 mph in a mere 7.71 seconds as well as from 120 mph to 220 mph in under 10 seconds!

As if you needed reminding, the Hennessey Venom GTs twin-turbocharged 7.0-liter V8 engine delivers an insane 1,244 hp at 1,155 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Additionally, it weighs just 1,244 kg making for a perfect 1 horsepower per 1 kilogram power-to-weight ratio!
