Mercedes-Benz is currently working on the next-generation G-Class. It will be the first overhaul of the popular offroader since its inception back in 1979. While it will be updated significantly, the company has revealed that from a styling perspective, it will look very similar to the outgoing car.
As a matter of fact, Daimler’s chief executive Dieter Zetsche recently said, “It has to continue as it looks today. It’s not a vehicle that pretends. The G-Class is the original.”
Beyond the looks, one of the most important aspects of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be weight saving. As a matter of fact, the car will be built around a brand new aluminium frame which alone is expected to save almost 400 kg! Despite the weight loss, the next-gen G-Class will actually be four inches wider than the outgoing model to improve its stability. Further weight loss measures are expected including lighter body panels.
Just like the current car, the next-gen G-Class will feature no less than three locking differentials while also receiving an independent front axle.
Alongside the visual and mechanical changes, the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will adopt a host of new engines. First off, the G500 will utilise the brand’s upcoming 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering about 460 hp. As for the G63 AMG, it will apparently maintain the current car’s 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine but now produce in the region of 570 hp.
