A prototype for the upcoming 2016 BMW X4 M40i has been spied testing for the very first time at the Nurburgring. Set to arrive on the market next year, the BMW X4 M40i will be the most powerful and performance focused X4 variant available before any true M-powered versions arrive.

Interestingly, this prototype is sporting a front bumper which looks identical to the existing X4 modes. However, there’s a good possibility it will be updated by the time the car reaches the market. At the rear, the car features dual tailpipes and a white diffuser.

Elsewhere, the car spied has some M performance wheels, lowered suspension and beefed up brakes. The car is expected to receive the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder as the upcoming M2 and should deliver an equal 370 hp.
