Synonymous with stars of the silver screen, the sleek 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster with flowing lines highlighted by neat fluting above the wheel arches, racy cooling ‘gills’ and lots of sparkling chrome, was the supercar of its day. Direct petrol injection helped it to swish to a top speed of 257 km/h, making it the fastest production car of the era – the SL discretely but appropriately standing for Sport Licht or Sport Light.

The glorious open-top classic is highly sought-after, as reflected by one example which went under the hammer for £651,100 at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale in September.
