It has just been confirmed that a new Porsche Boxster Spyder is on the cards with a launch expected in within the next year.

The car was confirmed during the official annual media and investor conference for the Volkswagen Group. All told, the German superpower said that across its portfolio of automakers, 50 new models will be released this year with those including the latest Audi Q7 SUV hitting the market as well as the next-generation Audi A4 sedan.

While details about the Porsche Boxster Spyder remain scarce, some reports suggest that it will receive the same upgraded engine as the Porsche Cayman GT4 and could deliver an identical 385 hp. Alternatively, there’s also a possibility that the German automaker will focus specifically on weight saving with the Boxster Spyder meaning it could feature the same 330 hp 3.4-litre flat-six petrol engine as the Boxster GTS.

Whatever the case may be and no matter how much power the Boxster Spyder delivers, there’s a good chance it will be exclusively available with a six-speed manual transmission just like the Cayman GT4. In order to ensure it weighs less than the existing Boxster, the interior is pinned to be stripped out with new lightweight wheels also being adopted.

If the new Porsche Boxster Spyder does indeed launch this year, September’s IAA Frankfurt Motor Show 2015 seems the most likely for its release.
