Just after it was confirmed that the first model from the McLaren Sports Series range will be dubbed the McLaren 570S, reports have surfaced suggesting that the second coupe variant will be the McLaren 540C.

Such a name certainly seems quite likely considering McLaren Automotive chief executive Mike Flewitt recently confirmed a ‘C’ badged model would be offered. Additionally, it seems apparent that the McLaren 540C will deliver 540 hp meaning it will deliver 20 hp more than its direct rival, the Porsche 911 Turbo. By comparison, the McLaren 570S produces 10 hp more than the Porsche 911 Turbo S. Both of these McLaren Sports Series models will derive their power from the British firm’s staple 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine.

Beyond borrowing its engine from other McLaren models, it has been confirmed that the Sports Series will also utilise the firm’s carbon fibre MonoCell monocoque and become the first car in its class with such a platform. In terms of pricing, chief executive Mike Flewitt recently confirmed that the new British sports car will be aimed squarely at the 911 Turbo and Turbo S duo.

Visually, the McLaren Sports Series will take heavy inspiration from both the 650S and P1. As a matter of fact, spy shots and teasers have revealed that the rear-end of the Sports Series will bare many similarities to the P1 with nearly identical LED taillights surrounding the rear air vents.
