Official: G-Power BMW M550d

BMW tuning experts G-Power have just taken the wraps off what they’re claiming is the world’s fastest diesel-powered BMW wagon with the release of the G-Power BMW M550d.

Official: G-Power BMW M550d

Beneath the skin, G-Power has managed to lift power from the tri-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six cylinder engine from 381 hp and 740 Nm of torque to in excess of 435 hp and 850 Nm of torque. As a result of that extra power and torque, the G-Power BMW M550d will accelerate to a top speed over 270 km/h. The sprint to 100 km/h takes a mere 4.5 seconds and the theoretical top speed actually sits at 300 km/h. The added power has been achieved thanks to the D-Tronik 5 V1 power module.

Elsewhere, the G-Power BMW M550d has been fitted with a set of 21-inch G-Power Hurricane RR forged wheels wrapped in rubber that measures 255/30 at the front and 295/25 at the rear. Despite measuring 9-inches wide at the front and 10.5 inch at the rear, these wheels are still extremely lightweight thanks to their advanced design.

“New world record for the fastest BMW station wagon with diesel engine: G-POWER M550d with 435 hp/(320 kW) and 850 Nm of torque and a top speed of more than 270 km/h

The BMW M550d is not just impressive because of its pioneer engine layout – speaking of multi-stage turbocharging and variable turbine geometry with three turbochargers – but because of its power output as well: 381 hp (280 kW) and a 740 Nm of torque enable a “M”- like driving dynamics, thus this Power-Diesel is allowed to carry the legendary “M” in its name. The first Diesel in the BMW history!

But this is not the end in terms of power output, yet. Thanks to the microprocessor controlled power module D-Tronik 5 V1 the M550d becomes a real G-POWER amongst the BMW diesel models. More than 435 hp/(320 kW) and an awesome 850 Nm of torque are the result of the dyno test.

At the same time “safety” is the top priority for G-POWER. It goes without saying that all factory diagnoses and safety features are preserved. Further protection is granted by the fact that the D-Tronik 5 V1 module releases the additional power only after the correct cooling water temperature determined by BMW has been reached. In return the power output is reduced to stock condition, in case the oil temperature reaches its limit in extreme situations.

But the true highlight of the D-Tronik 5 module is its ability to correspond to the actual accelerator level and thus to the requests of the driver. For example while cruising in heavy traffic the D-Tronik 5 is deactivated and the engine set-up is in stock condition.

When power output is requested by the driver, e.g. when accelerating or on the Autobahn, the additional output is G-POWER like instantly available and the 3.0l inline-6 cylinder is flexing its G-POWER trained muscles and demonstrates what modern diesel engines are capable of. From stand still to 100 km/h it takes the G-POWER M550d just 4,5s. Accelerated further the top speed is reached at more than 270 km/h, provided that the optional G-POWER V-MAX increase has been ordered. Than the G-POWER software for the ECU is lifting the electronic speed limit to a theoretical value of 300 km/h. Captured with GPS the G-POWER M550d reaches a top speed of 271,4 km/h. This is a new world record for the fastest BMW station wagon with diesel engine.

The powerful appearance of the G-POWER M550d is supported by the 21 inch G-POWER HURRICANE RR forged wheels, wrapped with tyres in the dimensions 255/30 ZR 21 and 295/25 ZR 21. The weight-optimized double spoke design – created in CAD and optimized by FEM analyses – highlights the BMW 5-series’ masculine and sporty design. Thanks to the use of ultra-lightweight aerospace aluminium for its production the G-POWER HURRICANE RR forged wheels in the dimension 9.0 x 21’’ and 10.5 x 21’’ are among the lightest wheels in their class.
