BMW X4 to be produced in Russia

BMW has confirmed that Russian-bound X4 models will now be produced in Russia itself. Consequently, the compact X4 crossover will join seven other BMW models being produced in Russia in collaboration with local partner Avtotor.

To create Russian X4s, the German manufacturer will ship across parts from its U.S. production facility in Spartanburg. The assembly kits will then be completed at Russia’s Kaliningrad plant.

The main reason why BMW wants to produce local X4s in Russia is it will allow the marque to avoid the recycling fee applied to imported vehicles in Russia. It is for the same reason that Mercedes-Benz is looking at opening a plant in Russia.

As it stands, the BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, 7-Series, X1, X3, X5 and X6 SUVs are produced in Russia with BMW’s partner Avtotor. Additionally, Avtotor creates vehicles for the likes of Opel, Chevrolet and Kia for the local Russian market.

No announcement has been made about when Russian production of the BMW X4 will commence.
