Yesterday the Cannonball 8000 started in London for a 3 day race to Zagreb. Todays leg was supposed to go from Brussels to Prague, was supposed to go yes as the German authorities forbid the Cannonballers to drive through Germany yesterday. Today the German police stopped 20 Cannonballers that tried to go through Germany anyway, on multiple highways patrol cars picked up Cannonballers and made them pay fines between 420 and 1000 euro’s.
Other Cannonballers said to drive around Germany to Prague, a route leads through France - Switserland and Austria. German police received all license plates from the participating cars from the French police so that even removing the stickers wouldn’t help them in an attempt to reach Prague through Germany. Team #98 and #87 in the Porsche Carrera 4S and Mercedes ML 420 CDI made the best of it and drove to the Hilton hotel in Amsterdam instead to build their own party… What was supposed to be the first checkpoint in Brussel last night turns out to be the finish for some of this years Cannonball ers.
It’s the third times this year the German authorities stop a roadrally from driving through the country. In May the Gumball 3000 was stopped and delayed on the way to the airport near Frankfurt and a month later it was ModBall that was stopped by German police and later cancelled.
The German police impounded more then 20 Cannonball cars including Lamborghini’s and Porsches, unofficial sources say at least 47 cars have been stopped. Read the rest
Cannonball 8000 is celebrating this year its 5th anniversary: London - Brussels - Prague - Zagreb
The 2007 Cannonball 8000 Rally promises to be the best Cannonball 8000 ever! Being the 5th Year Anniversary, they are making big plans to ensure that this year starts AND ends with a BANG!
Kicking off with a fabulous and glamorous pre-event party in a secret Central London location on the 13th September 2007. Early the following morning Earls Court will become the focus of attention for crowds of spectators and the media, as 120 cars, including some of the most exotic and rare Supercars in the world rev up their engines to prepare for the start line in what will be the most awesome, jaw dropping spectacle…. sleek cars, gorgeous girls, flashing cameras.
Cannonball 8000 put together a little video to show some of the 2006 event. In the meantime the drivers and organisers are already busy with preparing for next years edition. The 5 year anniversary will be celebrated with a 3 day run from London to Zagreb.
Ever wondered what it’s like to do a road rally in one of the most extreme vehicles possible? Two guys took an Ariel Atom out for the Cannonball 8000 last September. Not only is it one of the most extreme vehicles you can get these days it’s also one of the biggest eye catchers. The Ariel Atom does 0 - 60 mph in less then 3 seconds. This is a result of a 220 bhp engine combined with a car that just weighs 460 kg. No wonder it’s ranking very high at the top gear track record list. And that for just 35.000 pounds!
Enjoy the video they made during the first part of the Cannonball 8000 from London to the checkpoint in Brussels!
The Turbo Nutters take you with them in their Renault Clio 172 Cup during this years Cannonball 8000. Altogether it’s a nice highlight video of the Cannonball 8000. We attended the checkpoint in Brussels back in september and we were amazed to see some of our photos in this video. Anyway enjoy the video!
Yes, I was pulled over by an unmarked German police car. Yes, I was driving over the speed limit. And Yes, I cut the irate police officer up in my M5. No, I’m not sorry. You see this is my idea of fun and that is exactly what Cannonball 8000 delivers. Pure, unadulterated driving pleasure. The speeding was fine was merely a detail.
This is grand touring re-invented with a glitzy, edgy, ever so slightly naughty feel to it. Big brash machines, big parties, living the dream. Spending life in the fast lane, only to stop for petrol breaks and strong, black coffee.
Weekends can be spent alternatively undertaking activities such as hiking, or rambling but I’m 30 and life is short. Besides I hike to work everyday but Cannoball happens but once a year at the beginning of September and last for three glorious days. Never mind the fact you’ll require another short break to recover the following weekend, this is a once in a lifetime experience. It’s an adrenaline rush of speed and excess.
The premise is simple; eight countries in three days and whatever it takes to get to the finish line. I warn you now - this is no mean feat. You must firstly be prepared to give the organiser Conrad, five thousand pounds of your hard earned cash. He pretty much does the rest however, including; five star accommodation and black tie functions every evening, route planning and safety packs and an awesome party at either end of the event. The competitor Gumball has a similar event but at £50,000 for a five days, you probably have better things to be spending your cash on if you have that much to spare, like boats or houses.
Friday morning over 120 cars departed from Earls Court in London for a 3 day journey to Budapest as part of the Cannonball 8000. This year is the fourth edition and it is similar to previous Cannonball events: a group of petrolheads does a 3 day run through Europe Cannonball style.
After the start in Earls Court it was off to the channel tunnel and through france into Belgium. The cars drove into Brussel during fridays rush hour where crowds slowly started to build at the Conrad hotel once the first couple of cars arrived. One of the highlights of this years Cannonball 8000 was the Ariel Atom, a true sports car without a body.
Only two more days to go till the start of the fourth Cannonball 8000. A mad 3 day journey from London to Budapest with stops and parties in Brussels and Prague!
Among the participants are cars like a Porsche GT3, Cav GT40 Le Mans, Bentley Continental GT, Nissan Skyline GTR R33 and an Ariel Atom!
